Tejano R.O.O.T.S

Tejano R.O.O.T.S

Celebrating 15 years, the Tejano R.O.O.T.S (Remembering Our Own Tejano Stars) Hall of Fame is housed in an unassuming building in the birthplace of Tejano music, Alice, as declared by Gov. Rick Perry.
Founded by Rito Silva, Tony Morris and the late Javier Villanueva, the museum’s purpose is to recognize pioneers in the Tejano industry and preserve the genre’s culture and history.
The organization lost one of its founders, Villanueva in June 2010. He was proclaimed “The Dean of Tejano” and was a local radio personality and manager for musicians such as the late Laura Canales, Los Fabulosos Cuatro and Carlos Guzman.

Photos with the year of induction into the Hall of Fame line the walls of Tejano R.O.O.T.S. with other memorabilia, such as instruments and gold records, in front. Original outfits worn by some of the musicians, including Laura Canales from Kingsville, are also available for viewing.

Other items include an accordion played by Armando Lichtenberger Jr. and another by the first woman accordion player, Ventura Alonzo. There is also an exhibit on Beto Villa, the father of Orquestra Tejano.

Last year, several entertainers were inducted into the Hall of Fame as the Class of 2012. George Soto, Gilbert Gonzales, Bobby Gonzales, Ramon Salazar Jr., Frutoso Balderas, Rudy Machado, Jesse Carrillo and Jimmy Soliz of the Broken Hearts from Seguin, Texas.

Joe Placencio, Joe Sanchez and Mando Garza were chosen as the Favorite Sons of Alice, while Virginia Costante, Victor Lara Obregon, Magdaleno Serenil, Herman Mejia, Belen Bernal Soliz and Janie Moran were inducted for broadcasting.

The Conjunto Tradicionalinduction was awarded to Los Monarcas de Pete and Mario Diaz and Conjunto Falcon de Joe Moreida. Los Vidal was named the Conjunto Progressive.

Tejano Roots Hall of Fame Acceptance Speech

First of all let me give all praise and thanks to our Lord for keeping us alive long enough to receive this prestigious award. To our fans, friends and families who were responsible for submitting our name for consideration for induction and who made the trip to be here with us tonight, we say, thank you from the bottom of our “Broken Hearts”.

In 1958 after seeing the performance of one guitarist/singer Jerry Luna at a talent show, Ramon (Munchie) Salazar and Newton Avenue neighborhood best friend George Soto decided to form an all rock and roll band named The Playboys. They played in and around the Seguin area and actually recorded an original “Slowly, Slowly, But, Surely” by Little Tony Ross for Cobra Records of San Antonio. When the influence of bands like Isidro Lopez, Alfonso Ramos, Little Joe and Sunny Ozuna started to dominate the airwaves, the group made the gradual crossover into Tejano music and became, The Broken Hearts. They recorded over fifty three songs for Rosina Records, Zarape Records and other record companies. They toured the country from West Texas to Chicago and were recognized in the book “Chicano Soul” Recordings & History of an American Culture by Ruben Molina, Billboard magazine and numerous other publications and in a series of interviews for newspaper La Voz from Austin Texas.

I can’t name them all but would like to acknowledge all 37 former members of the band who made the Broken Hearts who they were, are and will be. There were several singers who graced the stage with the Broken Hearts over the years starting with the original singer for the Broken Hearts Johnny (Pichie) Ortiz, and followed not necessarily in order by Tony (Little Tony Ross) Castillo, two Black singers who sang in English and Spanish, Knolle Turner and Robbie Coleman who spoke fluent Spanish and appeared on the Domingo Pena Show. Then there was Mike Gonzales from San Antonio, Jimmy Solis, Gilbert Gonzales and yours truly Bobby Gonzales. But one of the reasons we are all here on this stage is because of the greatest singer the Broken Hearts and Tejano music has ever had, Sixto Sanchez. His voice captured every possible emotion as no other singer could or has, since he was taken from us at the early age of 20. I ask that the committee of the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame consider his name for induction as a solo artist for next year. Thanks to people like Daryl (DQ) Quintanilla @ www.Tejano.Fm in Austin and other DJ’s like him who keep Tejano music alive, you can still hear the music of the Broken Hearts and the evocative voice of Sixto Sanchez. Sixto …..this is for you…..thank you everybody.

Sixto Sanchez Jr. Vocalist with the Broken Hearts!

Only once in a great while does a band capture the attention of an entire generation, in a flash. Today a las ocho, 8:00 a.m. CST (Chicano Standard Time) we showcase one band that did just that. The singer would get s...o emotional singing about a lost true love that he would actually cry on stage, thereby capturing the mi...nds and hearts of all who heard this original, Tejano history making band. Then, just as fast as the audience grew and the word spread, he was killed in an auto accident on the road to fame and this completely original style was instantly gone. Considered by those who experienced the emotion and excitement, "the top band" of an entire style known as Tejano. Hear @ www.Tejano.FM.----Daryl DQ Quintanilla

BROKEN HEARTS

I remember in high school everyone was talking about the Broken Hearts. I never got to hear them in person! It seemed that they were here and then all too fast, they were gone. I consider this musica a Tejano music historical treasure.---- "DQ" Quintanilla
